Cannonically Correct

Skyla was still standing near that cannon with her hands on her hips and an annoyed look on her face. Really? No one was going to volunteer to help her? What a bunch of cry babies around here. Everyone should be happy for a chance to fly, shouldn’t they? Never mind if it involved a wall.

As she was reflecting with annoyance, a voice was heard in the gym. ”Hm?” Perking up, she turned and walked in the direction of the sound, finding poor Touya. ”Oh, perfect! Come in, come in!”

Black looked at the first contraption in front of him, which was decidedly blocking his path, and groaned. The Nimbasa Gym already gave him an upset stomach, so whatever the flying gym had in store for him, it wasn’t pretty. He opened the hatch on the first one, and saw that it was large enough for him to walk in. ”Here goes nothing,” he said, and stepped inside.

His foot triggered a switch, which closed the hatch behind him, and the contraption grew to life. It began whirring and moving, and Black instantly regretted his decision to challenge this gym. Finally, it locked in place with a click, and Black relaxed — until the floor turned out to be a taut rubber sheet which launched him into the air.

Oh crap, it’s a cannon. This gym has human cannons in it.

THUD! Black landed on the ground, his legs barely holding him up, and leaned on a nearby garbage can for support as his body decided whether or not it wanted to keep his lunch. After a moment, he looked around, and noticed nine or ten more cannons, with Skyla, the gym leader, standing next to one against a far wall, waving at him.

This is going to be fun, Black thought to himself.

Everyone was always teasing about that last cannon in Skyla’s gym. The others worked perfectly, but the last one had a bit of a glitch. Namely, it had a nasty habit of firing trainers dead smack into a wall. Whoops! She had been meaning to fix it for some time now, but had never gotten around to it. As a result, day after day, trainer after trainer went flying into that wall. Outside of the gym, people would hear a loud thud and they would know that yet another trainer was on their way to face Mistralton’s gym leader.

Today, she had finally gotten around to it, and now she stood, shifting a pair of goggles from her face to the top of her head as she dropped a tool into the box near her left foot. ”There! It should be all good now. Who wants to test it?!”

Silence…

“Hello?” Skyla looked around, finding that her trainers had all fled. Well damn! What babies! She would test it herself, but someone had to stand out here and make sure it fired ok. She needed a volunteer. Hopefully, some trainer would wander in looking for a match…

Black knocked on the doors to the Mistralton Gym, not knowing what he was going to expect, and the large doors swung inwards, revealing a large, open area.

“Hello?” he called out, and his voice echoed through the room. Where was everyone? And, more importantly, what were those large contraptions everywhere?

Black finished his food in a hurry and rushed to the door.

“Thanks for the lunch, mom!” he called, and hurried out the door.

“Be careful, Hilbert!” she said, and Black rolled his eyes.

“I will, mom, thanks. I’ll talk to you soon!” With that, he called out Airly, his Unfezant, and hopped on her back. ”Take me to Mistralton!” he shouted, and Airly flapped her great wings and shot into the air.

What Pokémon should I use? Black thought to himself. Boldly, his Boldore, knew some pretty powerful Rock moves, like Rock Slide and Power Gem, but then, Skyla might have a Swanna. He thought about using Leektric, his newly caught Tynamo, for electric backup, but he wasn’t sure if its basic learnset of Spark and Charge Beam would be enough.

Black put the Poké Balls back into his pocket as he figured he’d have both of them ready, just in case. ”Let’s go!”

At last, Airly landed in front of the Mistralton Gym. There seemed to be life inside — Skyla must be back by now. ”I wonder what she’s like,” he said to himself, and knocked on the large door.

I should go have something to eat, then I’ll head to Mistralton for my sixth gym battle. Do you think Rock-type or Electric-types would work better? I want to avoid another disaster like what happened with Elesa. Sandly had one heck of a time dodging Emolga’s attacks!

Leaf slid into a chair as Touya’s mother spoke to her. Just as Leaf was going to comment on his mother’s statement about Touya not being home very often, Touya cut in quickly, asking a question about where she was from.

“Well .. Believe it or not, but your letter got to Goldenrod City. That’s in Johto. But, I was there only for some Christmas shopping,” Leaf paused to take a breath,”I’m from Kanto though!”

“Wow, all the way to Johto? That’s really cool!” Black could hardly contain his excitement, and only narrowly missed knocking into his mother carrying the pot of soup to the table. Black had sometimes dreamed about visiting the Kanto and Johto regions. Professor Juniper had often talked about Kanto’s Professor Oak, and Black was interested in meeting the man one day. Maybe have a battle with him.

It occurred to him then that he’d been asking Leaf all about herself. She’d come to visit him, so it was clearly her intention to ask a few questions and learn about Unova. ”Now that you’re here, though, what would you like to know or see?”

Inside her head, Leaf was smiling like a complete doofus at the fact that Touya was letting her have that letter. Once she was alone, she would tape the letter into her diary and write a nice lengthy entry in accordance with it.

Leaf didn’t even notice that Touya reached for her hand — She was too occupied thinking about what to write later — and maybe that was a good thing because that would of just made things a little bit uncomfortable for the both of them. But she did notice him shuffling away and Leaf snapped back into reality,”No no. I’m not allergic to anything. I wasn’t really hungry but if your mom went though all of the trouble to make something, then why not?”

Black led Leaf to the kitchen. ”It’s right here,” he said, showing her to the table.

“Soup’s ready!” Black’s mother announced. ”It’s always nice to have company, Leaf,” she said. ”It does get lonely here after a while, what with Black travelling all the time!”

“So, Leaf, where are you from?” Black asked curiously. He knew that she had to have come from one of the Japanese regions, but couldn’t place which one she was from. He was never that good at learning about other cultures, mostly because he didn’t have direct experience, so this was an incredible opportunity. He had to try not to stop what he was doing and marvel at the possibilities that now opened up before him.

“Ah, hello Touya!” Touko said, waving her hand in greeting. She hadn’t expected to see her old friend here, and found it a pleasant surprise to see him, in fact. “It’s been a while, hm? How have you been?” she asked quickly, a bright smile remaining as she looked at the other brunette.

Black’s wrist twitched as his Xtransceiver jingled with an update from Touko, but he silenced it as dinner was about to start. He didn’t want to make things even more complicated than they already were, and they were about to get very interesting. He made a mental note to respond to Touko later that night…
